The suburban family farm… and how it can transform our world.

For centuries, stemming from the first agricultural revolution following the last ice age about 12,000 years ago, humans have rapidly advanced farming technology. From simple tools and crops, we have transformed the agricultural industry into a complex system of food production with the ability to feed large populations and sustain entire societies.

“The world is changing” — James Dashner

Even with the massive positive change brought by these human developments, there are drawbacks to this convenience:

  • Soil Degradation: overuse of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and monocropping reduces soil fertility and can lead to erosion and compaction.
  • Water Pollution: Runoff from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides contaminates rivers, lakes, and groundwater. This can lead to algae blooms that harm aquatic ecosystems.
  • Loss of Biodiversity: Large-scale monoculture (ex. corn) destroys habitats, reduces crop variety, and threatens pollinators like bees.
  • Climate Impact: Heavy reliance on modern machinery such as diesel ran tractors and fertilizer contributes to greenhouse gas emissions leading to climate change.
  • Animal Welfare Issues: Industrial farming relies on factory farming methods such as overcrowding in order to meet demands leading to unnatural living conditions and suffering for animals.

“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference” — Nelson Mandela

Where suburban farming comes in.

When I drive through suburban and even rural areas of a city, I’m met with the constant droning of lawn mowers and chainsaws from residents upkeeping their idea of a “perfect lawn”. Yards are left open and barren for the sake of aesthetics or HOA compliance. Even with this, there exists opportunity for small, yet powerful, changes that could impact the community and the world at large.

Not only can you make an impact to the world by creating a sanctuary for growth and prosperity. Your family and even your neighbors will benefit greatly. Imagine being able to teach your children vital skills they can carry with themselves for the rest of their life. Resilience, empathy, hard work, and responsibility.

And yet, aesthetics and time don’t have to be sacrificed. Self-sustaining beautiful gardens have been created by people who have the know-how to do so. Some of them built on less than a half an acre! If they can do it, so can you…

Massive benefits of creating a suburban farm

  • Organic, chemical free foods: with a properly set up farm, you can reap the rewards of having year round harvest of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and grains that can have a significant impact on your weekly grocery bill!
  • Creating a safe haven for animals: it is common with the increased breeding for farm animals for many to be cast aside or simply rehomed. Using local Facebook groups and farming communities, you can give these animals a new life and also benefit from their generosity through eggs and other animal products.
  • Learning Environment: creating and maintaining a small farm is a constant learning process and there is always a new lesson to be learned each and every day! This applies not only to yourself, but your neighbors, parents, children, and community!
  • Revitalization of the surrounding community: Additions like bees can help foster growth of the local ecosystem and the environment of your surrounding community that can ultimately spread to the globe!
